Giants of Islamic leadership

A 4- week course highlighting the lives and legacies of 6 great leaders from Islamic history

course overview

This four-week course explores the lives, leadership, and lasting legacies of some of the greatest figures in Islamic history. Figures whose faith, courage, intellect, and moral clarity shaped the course of the Ummah and continue to inspire generations.

Students will examine how Islamic leadership was embodied across different roles: the just ruler, the scholar of principle, the reformer, and the commander driven by faith rather than power. Rather than treating these figures as distant historical icons, this course brings their struggles, decisions, and values into conversation with the challenges of leadership today.

The course will cover the lives of:

  • ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه) – Justice, accountability, and governance
  • ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz – Reform, humility, and moral revival
  • Hārūn al-Rashīd – Power, responsibility, and patronage of knowledge
  • Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal – Scholarly integrity under persecution
  • Nūr al-Dīn al-Zangī – Spiritual revival as a foundation for political strength
  • Ṣalāḥuddīn al-Ayyūbī – Leadership rooted in mercy, unity, and purpose

Students will gain insight into:

  • What Islamic leadership looks like in practice
  • How faith shaped decision-making under pressure
  • The balance between authority, humility, and accountability
  • Timeless lessons applicable to personal growth, community leadership, and parenting
